A hard drive is a case with magnetic platters, that revolve at a high rate of speed and can have information written to it and retrived from it. There are several types of hard drives currently in use, the IDE, ATA, SATA, SCSI are the most common. The newer machines generally use SATA (Serial ATA) drives because of their faster writing and retrieval speeds, and smaller cable size.
